HALLOWEEN'S
Celtic Roots & More

"EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HALLOWEEN"

By Brian Handwerk Via Nationalgeographic.Com

From the holiday’s Celtic history to this year’s top costumes, here’s what to know to have a smart and scary holiday.

We’ve been wearing Halloween costumes for nearly two millennia. To help you celebrate, we've summoned up that history, as well as a number of fun-size facts. Archaeologists are still unearthing Halloween's roots at Celtic spiritual centers like the Hill of Ward (originally known as Tlachtga) in County Meath, Ireland. The holiday is descended most directly from the celebration of Samhain (SAH-win), the Celtic New Year observed between the sunsets of October 31 and November 1. "THE ART OF CLIMATE CHANGE"

Interview wi an MIT researcher on science, design, and optimism

IDEO STORIES BY MISA MISONO VIA MEDIUM.COM

It was Thursday night at the Asian Art Museum. Opaque black balloons hovered over a grand stairwell leading to the main event.  Each balloon in the canopy represented carbon emissions. While passing underneath, attendees could tug on a balloon and with a satisfying pop, release a message on a way they could impact the world’s CO2 levels with seemingly small choices. The point? Individual decisions can — and do — add up.

Ani Liu, an artist and technologist currently completing her Master’s degree at MIT’s famed Media Lab, spent the summer  in IDEO’s Food Studio. Trained in fine arts as well as architecture, Ani found herself increasingly inspired by a whole new medium: science. It’s a strange intersection with surprising crossovers, and is the basis of her research in what she calls “speculative storytelling”. She came to IDEO to learn the approach to design in food and to inspire us with her unique perspective on science and art. Misa Misono converse  with Ani about her experience creating this exhibit and what we could learn from it.

Glow-in-the-dark solar-powered cycle lane shimmers blue
By  Martin Hislop via Designboom.com

glow-in-the-dark solar-powered cycle lane: cycling has become a hugely popular activity in poland, thanks to the country’s recent investments in biking infrastructure. now, a recently unveiled bike path in the north of poland–near lidzbark warminski in the mazury region–that can light up at night and glow a luminous blue hue, is enhancing cyclists’ safety; comfort; and sustainability to the activity.  installed by polish construction company,TPA sp. z. o. o. and influenced by the similar dan roosegaarde solar powered ‘van gogh’ bike path in the netherlands, poland’s new bike path offers a completely solar-powered solution.

the glow-in-the-dark solar-powered cycle lane emits a bright blue shimmer that illuminates the pathway as the sun goes down, the route is an eye-catching and functional addition to the regions’ streets. for many polish cyclists, bicycles are a primary form of transportation. this suggests that biking infrastructure needs to consider nighttime riders and aid in curbing pedestrian–cyclist accidents that are have a higher likelihood to occur during these hours. however, as the financial and environmental costs involved in providing overhead lighting for bike paths in cities are so high, sustainable solutions like TPA’s innovative path are crucial. "How Crowdfunding Has Changed the Startup Game"

How Crowdfunding Has Changed the Game
By Peter Rejcek Singularity Hub

CROWDFUNDING: DEMOCRATIZATION & DIGITIZATION ACCELERATING INNOVATION

The development of innovative technology — from virtual reality headsets to space exploration to solar-powered roadways — is no longer the province of companies with big R&D budgets or venture capitalists with deep pockets. Many of today’s tech entrepreneurs don’t stand on the shoulders of giants — they surf a crowd of people to find success.

Crowdfunding has become a multi-billion-dollar industry, funneling millions of dollars into thousands of projects. Technology in particular is one of the leading categories on popular fundraising platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. On the former, it’s the third-ranked most-funded category, behind games and design, with more than $500 million pledged since Kickstarter began in 2009. On Indiegogo a third of funds raised come from technology and design campaigns.

“Many of the tech breakthroughs on Kickstarter have to do with making tech more accessible. Tools that were once only available in factories are now available to regular people in their own homes or nearby marketplace,” says David Gallagher, a spokesperson for the Brooklyn-based company.

Creativity does not start with a solution. It starts with a problem. Creativity is not a search for something someone else thought of - it's not a guessing game. Do all these brain-teasers we come across really have something to do with creativity?

Creativity is not a search for something someone else thought of - it's not a guessing game. Creativity is a search that does not have a predefined result. In most cases, creativity is expecting the unexpected. So, the question is: how can we tease our brain to practice and improve our creativity? ...Read this full article via  CreativityPost.com
