Norah Jones
"Black Hole Sun" Live
AMAZING TRIBUTE TO CHRIS CORNELL

Jones honors Cornell with bluesy, solo-piano rendition of Soundgarden classic song... On May 17, 2017, Cornell died in Detroit after performing at a show with Soundgarden,  Jones brought "Black Hole Sun" into her wheelhouse, toning down the crashing drone of the original and remaking it as a spare, bluesy number. She sketched a melody with handsome piano chords, and as she sang, she stretched words and toyed with the space between them.

Norah Jones performed a solo piano cover of the Soundgarden hit "Black Hole Sun" on Tuesday night in tribute to Chris Cornell, who  dies  at age 52. Jones was playing at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, which was also the site of Cornell's final show. "Black Hole Sun" is a song by US rock band Soundgarden. Written by frontman Chris Cornell, the song was released in 1994 as the third single from the band's fourth studio album Superunknown (1994). It is arguably the band's most recognizable and most popular song, and remains a well known song from the 1990s. Cornell stated, "It's just sort of a surreal dreamscape, a weird, play-with-the-title kind of song."

"Jones brought "Black Hole Sun" into her wheelhouse, toning down the crashing drone of the original and remaking it as a spare, bluesy number. She sketched a melody with handsome piano chords, and as she sang, she stretched words and toyed with the space between them. Around the four-minute mark, Jones suddenly left tranquility behind by elevating her volume and wailing the song's title several times. The performance came to a peaceful end with a quiet, melancholy figure on the piano".

CHRIS CORNELL

Chris Cornell  was an American musician, singer and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter and rhythm guitarist for Seattle rock band Soundgarden and as lead vocalist and songwriter for the group Audioslave. He was also known for his numerous solo works and soundtrack contributions since 1991, and as founder and frontman for Temple of the Dog, the one-off tribute ba

Cornell said (Black Hole Sun):
"It's funny because hits are usually sort of congruent, sort of an identifiable lyric idea, and that song pretty much had none. The chorus lyric is kind of beautiful and easy to remember. Other than that, I sure didn't have an understanding of it after I wrote it. I was just sucked in by the music and I was painting a picture with the lyrics. There was no real idea to get across." Commenting upon how the song was misinterpreted as being positive, Cornell said, "No one seems to get this, but 'Black Hole Sun' is sad. But because the melody is really pretty, everyone thinks it's almost chipper, which is ridiculous."

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics
Songwriters: CHRIS CORNELL

In my eyes, indisposed
In disguises no one knows
Hides the face, lies the snake
And the sun in my disgrace
Boiling heat, summer stench
'Neath the black the sky looks dead
Call my name through the cream
And I'll hear you scream again

Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come (Won't you come)

Stuttering, cold and damp
Steal the warm wind tired friend
Times are gone for honest men
And sometimes far too long for snakes
In my shoes, a walking sleep
And my youth I pray to keep
Heaven sent hell away
No one sings like you anymore

Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come

Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)

Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)

Hang my head, drown my fear
Till you all just disappear

Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come

Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)
Won't you come (Black hole sun, Black hole sun)
Won't you come
Won't you come
