Sustainability: The Key to Small Business Survival?

 By Julie Urlaub Taiga Company
The report, The Impact of Regulatory Costs on Small Firms via Small Business Administration, assessed the overall cost of federal regulation on small businesses in five major sectors of the U.S. economy.  According to the post, Small Businesses Are Hit Harder by Regulations, “the report showed that costs are particularly disproportionate in the manufacturing sector. Small manufacturers’ compliance costs per employee are more than double the costs for mid-sized and large firms.  What specific types of regulations are the most costly? Compliance with environmental regulations costs nearly four times as much in small businesses than in large ones, while the cost of tax compliance is more than twice as high in small firms than in large ones."

Newsweek's 2012 Green Rankings: This time it's serious

teaser_overall_big
The fourth annual look at the most environmentally-friendly companies, we compared the world’s largest 500 companies according to their environmental footprint, management (policies, initiatives, controversies), and transparency. We partnered with Trucost and Sustainalytics, two leading research companies. The methodology was developed in consultation with an advisory panel of experts in corporate sustainability. The resulting ranking is the most comprehensive available on the topic.

The latest Green Rankings from Newsweek are out, and while there aren’t any show-stopping changes from last year, at least at the top of the list, this year’s rankings represent the first meaningful, apples-to-apples comparison of company performance in the rankings’ four-year history.

Fifty Years of Bond

James Bond’s 50th Anniversary 007 Gallery

Why Men Bond with the 007 Theme

Maybe it's the stealthy bass line. Or the machine-gun guitar solo. Or the swaggering wail of the horns. Or maybe it's all three shaken together. Whatever the reasons (and there are many), the "James Bond Theme" still has a way of making guys feel, well, more guy-ly.

Fifty years after appearing in "Dr. No"—the first James Bond film, which had its premiere in London on Oct. 5, 1962—the jaunty theme is back with a vengeance. At the Olympics' opening ceremony, the theme played as Britain's "queen" parachuted from a helicopter. On Oct. 5, Vic Flick, the theme's original guitarist, will perform his signature solo during "The Music of James Bond: The First 50 Years" at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. And it will be laced throughout the latest Bond film, "Skyfall," opening on Nov. 9.

How Innovative Leaders Maintain Their Edge

#1: Salesforce.com (U.S.)

This issue marks our second year collaborating with Forbes to rank the The  World's 100 Most Innovative Companies (Forbes - Full list) based upon an innovation premium. Since last year’s inaugural list was published, we’re often asked: “Why are some companies able to create and sustain a high innovation premium while others don’t?” While still in the early stages of an in-depth analysis of high- versus low-innovation premium companies, our initial results show at least three key things that the innovative companies do to create and sustain an innovation premium.
How well companies leverage people, process, and philosophies (what we call the 3Ps) differentiates the best in class from the next in class when it comes to keeping innovation alive and delivering an innovation premium year after year.

INNOVATIVE CAKE

Creativity, Innovation And Cake
BY Jeffrey Paul Baumgartner via Designtaxi.com

In short, creativity is about the ideas. Innovation is about the implementation of those ideas in order to institute change.”

Back in 2009, I became concerned about a lack of consistent terminology in the field of innovation. One of the most commonplace errors I come across is people confusing the terms “creativity” and “innovation”. Often, experts are talking about creativity, but they use the word “innovation” because they believe it is a sexier business term than “creativity”. This lack of consistent terminology continues today—and I am seeing a critical problem that is resulting from inconsistent terminology: actual innovation is not happening!

Every Leader Is an Artist

Creativity & Leadership

"Leadership is an actual Art, not metaphorically an Art"

by Michael O'Malley via HBR Blog Network
The connection between leadership and art has been made many times over, usually as a way to single out certain properties of the arts that carry over to leadership, such as a jazz musician's ability to create through improvisation. These analogies can be compelling, but my point is more ambitious: leadership is an actual art, not metaphorically an art. The same attributes that distinguish great from mediocre artists distinguish exceptional leaders from their ordinary counterparts. The best leaders and artists give us perspective on our social condition (good or bad) and greater appreciation of our world, ourselves, and our choices. Moreover, they challenge, excite, comfort, and motivate. They bring us closer together by providing a forum for shared experiences and by forging a sense of community. Leadership and art both animate social encounters. They can change our lives in ways that are as invigorating and real as being hit by a wave.

Sustainability: More than Just Being ‘Green’

    By David Stryker via Environmentalleader.com

Experts say there will be another 2 billion people living on our Earth by 2050.  To support these folks — and those already here — we will need the resources of almost three Earths.  To state the obvious, this need poses some imminent and urgent global challenges. Optimization and conservation of the Earth’s finite natural resources will be the defining growth drivers over the coming decades. Solutions that help sustainably feed, hydrate, house, move, power and keep the growing world community healthy will drive business success.

No single company, government or institution alone can solve these inter-connected global challenges. To the contrary, truly impactful solutions will derive from collaborative innovation between corporate, governmental, non-governmental and academic institutions.

Smart Cities On The Planet 2012

The Top 10 Smart Cities On The Planet
WRITTEN BY:  via Fast Company's Co.Exist
Last year, I spent considerable time researching best practices for climate resilient cities--an endeavor that culminated in what I believe was the first ever global ranking of resilient cities. Now, after extensive research on smart cities initiatives around the globe, I have developed what may be the first ever global rankings of smart cities.

The term "smart cities" is a bit ambiguous. Some people choose a narrow definition--i.e. cities that use information and communication technologies to deliver services to their citizens. I prefer a broader definition: Smart cities use information and communication technologies (ICT) to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.

Here, then, are the top 10 smart cities:

The World's 50 Most Innovative Companies 2012

The annual guide to the businesses that matter most, the ones whose innovations are having an impact across their industries and our culture. Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are transformational firms, obsessions of the business world and deservedly so. But if you had to pick, which one would you say is the most innovative--literally, the most innovative company in the world? (And then who's No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4?). Then see if your opinion matches ours. If it doesn't, worry not. In a month or so, one of these firms will surely disrupt everything again.
