Meet the First Female Lego Minifig Scientist
She carries two small Erlenmeyer flasks and a bright, cheerful smile. She's the first of her kind and she's positively delightful! This weekend Lego unveiled their Minifigure Series 11 and the stand-out is the female scientist. This is Prof. Bodin, the minifig who's breaking the brick ceiling.
According to her bio, Professor C. Bodin "won the coveted Nobrick Prize for her discovery of the theoretical System/DUPLO® Interface." This latest minifig is significant because she's the first female Lego scientist. For reasons unknown most Lego STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) minifigs are male.
Lego first started producing STEM-related sets back in the late-70s with the Space series. But a female minifig wasn't introduced in the Space series until the early '90s, when the first female astronaut made her debut in the Ice Planet 2002. Female minifigs appeared in the Town sets (later called City) in STEM professions, such as the first female minifig doctor. But male minifigs have always dominated. This latest minifig collection also includes: Evil Mech, Yeti, Jazz Musician, Holiday Elf, Constable, Dirndl Girl, Diner Waitress, Scarecrow, Barbarian, Welder, Mountain Climber, Grandma, Island Warrior and a Gingerbread Man. In addition, there's also aLady Robot, "who just loves to party."
The fun-loving, rosy-cheeked, lipstick-wearing minifig fembot is bit disappointing. She's covered in pink and has some pretty cute, er, strategically-placed gauges.
