Earth, appreciated ...talks about protecting our planet #EarthDay

#EarthDay

Sustainability & Nature
12 great Ted talks about protecting our planet

Our planet is a wonder, a perfectly improbable incubator for life. It’s also in danger because of our indifference. Reflections on both those truths.

Playlist (12 talks): Earth, appreciated

In honor of #EarthDay, great  talks about protecting our planet:

  • In this image-filled talk, Yann Arthus-Bertrand displays his three most recent projects on humanity and our habitat — stunning aerial photographs in his series "The Earth From Above," personal interviews from around the globe featured in his web project "6 billion Others," and his soon-to-be-released movie, "Home," which documents human impact on the environment through breathtaking video.

  • We live in a world of unseeable beauty, so subtle and delicate that it is imperceptible to the human eye. To bring this invisible world to light, filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg bends the boundaries of time and space with high-speed cameras, time lapses and microscopes. At TED2014, he shares highlights from his latest project, a 3D film titled "Mysteries of the Unseen World," which slows down, speeds up, and magnifies the astonishing wonders of nature.

  • In this stunning slideshow, celebrated nature photographer Frans Lanting presents The LIFE Project, a poetic collection of photographs that tell the story of our planet, from its eruptive beginnings to its present diversity. Soundtrack by Philip Glass.

  •
Rachel Sussman shows photographs of the world's oldest continuously living organisms — from 2,000-year-old brain coral off Tobago's coast to an "underground forest" in South Africa that has lived since before the dawn of agriculture.

  • Photographer Camille Seaman shoots icebergs, showing the world the complex beauty of these massive, ancient chunks of ice. Dive in to her photo slideshow, "The Last Iceberg."

Top climate scientist James Hansen tells the story of his involvement in the science of and debate over global climate change. In doing so he outlines the overwhelming evidence that change is happening and why that makes him deeply worried about the future.

  • Paul Gilding The Earth is full
Have we used up all our resources? Have we filled up all the livable space on Earth? Paul Gilding suggests we have, and the possibility of devastating consequences, in a talk that's equal parts terrifying and, oddly, hopeful.
  • In this brand-new slideshow (premiering on TED.com), Al Gore presents evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists recently predicted. He challenges us to act.
  • Sylvia Earle My wish: Protect our oceans
Legendary ocean researcher Sylvia Earle shares astonishing images of the ocean — and shocking stats about its rapid decline — as she makes her TED Prize wish: that we will join her in protecting the vital blue heart of the planet.

  • "I don't think we're going to make it," John Doerr says in an emotional talk about climate change and investment. To create a world fit for his daughter to live in, he says, we need to invest now in clean, green energy.
  • Alex Steffen The route to a sustainable future
Worldchanging.com founder Alex Steffen argues that reducing humanity’s ecological footprint is incredibly vital now, as the western consumer lifestyle spreads to developing countries.

  • Johan Rockstrom Let the environment guide our development
Human growth has strained the Earth's resources, but as Johan Rockstrom reminds us, our advances also give us the science to recognize this and change behavior. His research has found nine "planetary boundaries" that can guide us in protecting our planet's many overlapping ecosystems.

The Nearly Guilt-Free Hot Shower, Provided by EcoDrain

Sustainability & Technology

"The Nearly Guilt-Free Hot Shower, Provided by EcoDrain"

By J. Matthew Roney via Sustainablog

Do you enjoy a good hot shower? Who doesn’t, right? But any good greenie knows that you’re also using up precious resources: not just water, but also energy. Water heating’s a pretty energy-intensive proposition, as water itself can absorb an awful lot of heat… so it takes lots of energy (relatively) to get it to the temperature necessary for that steamy shower.  And that’s all you get for that energy: once that water heads down the drain, the heat and energy goes with it. That hot shower doesn’t just feel luxurious… it is!

What if you could recapture and reuse some of that heat energy? The technology’s actually existed to do this for some time, but mostly at large scales. There are options for your shower water, but they’ve traditionally been expensive and fairly inefficient.

Most of the solar-powered schools we’ve encountered have sprouted up in the developed world, driven by a desire for lighter environmental impact, lower electric bills, and additional educational opportunities provided by the technology itself. In the developing world, though, solar power may be the only way to provide educational opportunities that require electricity: political unrest, poverty, and lack of development all keep power grids from expanding into remote areas in many parts of the world. For young people in those places, that means the chance to learn about the latest technologies are limited… if they’re available at all.

10 Breakthrough Innovations

That Will Shape The World In 2025

 by Ben Schiller via  FastCoExist

A world where food is plentiful and drugs are personalized may not be as far off as it seems. What world-changing scientific discoveries might we see by 2025? Will we have more energy technologies that move us away from fossil fuels? Will there be cures for cancer and other diseases? How will we get around and communicate?. To make some predictions, the Thomson Reuters IP & Science unit looked at two sorts of data: current scientific journal literature and patent applications. Counting citations and other measures of buzz, they identified 10 hot fields, then made specific forecasts for each.

"The Third Blood Moon" Streaming Live via NASA (Lunar Eclipse)

Science & Culture

On Saturday morning, April 4, 2015 not long before sunrise, the bright full moon over North America should turn a lovely shade of celestial red during a total lunar eclipse.

Due to its reddish color, a total eclipse of the moon is sometimes referred to as a blood moon. In addition, in the 2010s the media started to associate the term "blood moon" with the four full moons of a lunar tetrad, especially the 2014-2015 tetrad coinciding with the feasts of Passover and Tabernacles. A lunar tetrad is a consecutive sequence of four lunar eclipses, spaced six months apart.

what would be your definition of creativity and intuition

Creativity & Intuition

Intuition as the Basis for Creativity

By Carla A.M. Woolf via Creativitypost

Conscientiousness is inefficient and subject to dullness without creativity, and creativity does its best work when it functions intuitively.

Recently, a parent who is also a teacher, asked me on behalf of a friend to offer some advice on how to ensure that her child will grow up to exemplify a sense of higher conscientiousness. In moments like these, past recollections come to mind of parents having inquired about methods, ideas or techniques that might assist them in raising their children’s aptitudes for one particular trait or another, which they believe to be of the utmost importance. Sought after advice comes in various contexts and requests, such as “I just want my child to be ~ smart and successful” or, “just be able to use good judgment in all matters”, or “have good manners and social behavior” or, “be happy and know the value of hard work”, “live his passion”, “be a good critical thinker”, “get along with everyone”, “contribute something to the world”, “use free will responsibly”, “make good decisions”, “have common sense”, etc.
