EPICA "CRY FOR THE MOON" LIVE
Metal, atmosphere and sentimentality with Simone Simons
The music of Epica is aggressive, bombastic and excessive with some songs being "epic, grand and majestic" and others "more subdued and introspective." The band is also known to have progressive tendencies while a gothic atmosphere and sentimentality is also present in their music.
"Cry for the moon" is first song of the album The Phantom Agony. It was written by Markus Jansen ;Adrianus A.d. Sluijter & Simone J.m. Simons. Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band, founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen after his departure from After Forever. They are known for their symphonic sound and the use of female vocals and male growls, performed by Simone Simons and Mark Jansen respectively, whilst writing primarily their lyrics. Their songs largely deal with philosophical topics, including science, politics, society, religion, and world events.
The contrast between Simone Simons' operatic vocals and Mark Jansen's death grunts is a feature of Epica's music.
Epica performs a blend of symphonic metal, progressive metal, gothic metal, melodic death metal, thrash metal, symphonic black metal and, more rarely, folk metal and power metal. Their former guitarist Ad Sluijter having described the band as "a bridge between power metal and gothic metal." Vocalist Simone Simons has expressed a preference for the group to be described as symphonic metal though the founder of the group Mark Jansen notes that they do not mind being called gothic metal. Mark Jansen having described the band also as "symphonic death metal" and a bridge between death metal and symphonic metal.

Epica uses a "trademark of many symphonic and gothic metal bands" in contrasting "two extremes, death grunts and brutality on one side, airy female melodiousness on the other." Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic notes that the band's "attraction ultimately hinges on exploring the sonic contrasts of light and dark; the punishing intensity of those elephantine guitar riffs and hyperactive drumming cast against the soaring, layered sweetness of the orchestrated strings and keyboards." Simone Simons delivers operatic vocals in a mezzo-soprano range though she has also been known to sometimes sing "with a clear alto voice that has a flawless tone and a lot of emotion." But, subsequently, Simone admitted that she was wrong and that she's not a mezzo-soprano, but a soprano. Mark Jansen delivers death grunts "that are secondary to Simons' singing, but very important in terms of balance and variety." The group is also known to employ human choirs and orchestras with additional embellishments such as spoken word recitals and lyrics in Latin and Arabic

CRY FOR THE MOON LYRICS
Songwriters: Markus Jansen;Adrianus A.d. Sluijter;Simone J.m. Simons
from The Phantom Agony
Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
Behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing of whole truth can we disclose
The soul of this bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever
Indoctrinated minds so very often
Contain sick thoughts
And commit most of the evil they preach against
Dont try to convince me with messages from God
You accuse us of sins committed by yourselves
Its easy to condemn without looking in the mirror
Behind the scenes opens reality
Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor is the will to forget
Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
Behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the whole truth can we disclose
The soul of this bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever
Virginity has been stolen at very young ages
And the extinguisher loses its immunity
Morbid abuse of power in the Garden of Eden
Where the apple gets a youthful face, a youthful face
Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor is the will to forget
Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
Behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the whole truth can we disclose
The soul of this bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever
Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor is the will to forget
You cant go on hiding yourself
(Follow your common sense, you cannot hide yourself)
Behind old fashioned fairy tales
(Follow your common sense, you cannot hide yourself)
And keep washing your hands in innocence
