As an animated Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward celebrate the holidays in a snowbound cabin. Ward and Deschanel brave the blizzard to snag a wreath, shovel some snow and attempt to fix their power lines. M. Ward says he has to leave even if "it's cold outside," despite Deschanel's wishes, and though he gets all the way to the car, he remembers this season is for loved ones and quickly returns to the cabin.

A Very She & Him Christmas was announced on Pitchfork.com in September 2011. Amazon.com said on 29 December 2011 that the album was one of its top three best-selling MP3-albums over the Christmas period.

"Baby, It's Cold Outside"
"Baby, It's Cold Outside" is a song written by Frank Loesser in 1944. It is a call and response duet in which one of the singers (usually performed by a male voice) attempts to convince a guest (usually performed by a female voice) that they should stay together for a romantic evening because the weather is cold and the trip home would be difficult. The lyrics in this duet are designed to be heard as a conversation between two people, identified as "mouse" and "wolf" on the printed score; they have returned to the wolf's home after a date, and the mouse decides it is time to go home, but the wolf flirtatiously invites the mouse to stay as it is late and "it's cold outside." The mouse wants to stay and enjoy herself, but feels obligated to return home, worried what family and neighbors will think if she stays. Every line in the song features a statement from the mouse followed by a response from the wolf, which is musically known as a call and response song.
Although some critical analyses of the song have highlighted parts of the lyrics such as "What's in this drink?" and his unrelenting pressure to stay despite her repeated suggestions that she should go home, others noted that cultural expectations of the time period were such that women were not socially permitted to spend the night with a boyfriend or fiance, and that the female speaker states that she wants to stay, while "what's in this drink" was a common idiom of the period used to rebuke social expectations by blaming one's actions on the influence of alcohol.

Deschanel and Ward first met on the set of the film The Go-Getter, in which Deschanel had a starring role. The director, Martin Hynes, introduced them to each other and asked them to sing a duet together to be played at the end credits of the film. They decided to perform a Richard and Linda Thompson song titled "When I Get to the Border." The two bonded over a shared interest in the records produced by George Martin and Phil Spector, as well as certain Ralph Peer groups, such as the Carter Family.

Ward, having heard Deschanel sing previously in the film Elf, was surprised to learn that she wrote songs herself, but hadn't pursued a career in music. Deschanel commented in an interview with Venus Zine: “I always thought I would be able to sing and act, but at a certain point, it became difficult for me to share the music part. So I was writing a ton of music, but not really doing anything with it. I didn't really know exactly who to collaborate with… until I met Matt, and everything seemed to fall into place.” Deschanel had actually done years' worth of home demos, but was shy about becoming a big-name celebrity. On a whim, she decided to send them to Ward.[6] Ward called her a short time later, telling her that he would like to record her songs properly, and their band She & Him was formed.[citation needed] Deschanel said in an interview: "I always have loved music, ever since I was really little. I just loved to sing."
