"Technology Is the Great Amplifier of Our Humanity"

Technology Is the Great Amplifier of Our Humanity

Interview with @EmiliaLahti By Alison Berman via @singularityhub

Kentaro Toyama used to speak about the idea that technology amplifies what's already out there. I'm very interested in finding ways to cultivate virtues such as compassion and kindness—all the things that actually help us relate to each other. Then exponential technology can meet this fertile ground, and the results will be more beneficial for humankind. Technology is not a miracle drug. It's not going to just go and fix everything if we are corrupted in our minds and in our hearts. Technology can help to bring more people into this global conversation, but we need to also talk about the quality of that connection. How are we using the technology to facilitate connection? Is it something that can help empower people’s voices? That is something we have to decide. We have to create the infrastructure—it's not going to happen just by itself. This is part of the global consciousness discussion. It’s definitely a global challenge—how to make people be more aware.

"We have this massive power to open doors for each other, but also, to close them. So let's make sure that our behavior, when we encounter people, is the kind that opens doors and elevates people. I think that's the only way to really change the world for the better." One of My favorite quotes is from Aristotle,
"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all."    –Emilia Lahti.    See full Interview via Singularity Hub...

"The Clash - London Calling" Tribute to 36th Aniversary

ROck N' Roll & DisrupT

London Calling is the third studio album by English punk rock band the Clash. Released today in 1979, the cover was an homage to Elvis Presley debut album...    London Calling has been considered by many critics to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time. In a contemporary review for The New  York Times, John Rockwell said the album finally validated the acclaim received by the Clash up to that point because of how their serious political themes and vital playing were retained in music with innovative features and broad appeal: "This is an album that captures all the Clash's primal energy, combines it with a brilliant production job by Guy Stevens and reveals depths of invention and creativity barely suggested by the band's previous work."

Creativity is the Key Skill

Creativity is the Key Skill for the 21st Century

By Dr. Mark Batey via creativitypost.com

Against a backdrop of uncertainty, economic turmoil and unprecedented change a new picture is emerging of the skills and traits for success (and perhaps even simply survival) in the modern era. At the heart of this essential skillset for the future lies... creativity.
A raft of recent research studies demonstrates that creativity is vital from the shopfloor to the boardroom and at the level of the individual to the organization as a whole.  What is more... our economic fortunes at a societal level probably rest on creativity too. Below are 7 (magnificent!) themes and some research studies that convinced me.  I wonder if they will convince you of the cruciality of creativity too.

Veganism: A Fad? Or the Future of Food?

Veganism: A Fad? Or the Future of Food?

While we haven’t done as much on veganism lately as we once did when Justin was submitting posts regularly, we’re still mindful of the impacts of the traditional animal-based diet on the environment and human health. So, while many will call this lifestyle choice a “fad” encouraged by the celebrity set, we know that veganism is a solid option for a healthy lifestyle… and is easier on the planet. Though we don’t all practice veganism, understanding the impacts of our food choices helps us make those choices knowingly… not the kind of mindset normally associated with the American diet.

So, why is the vegan lifestyle growing in the US? Sure, it’s presence in popular culture makes a difference… but it’s also clear from the infographic below that many Americans are becoming more mindful of their food choices, and aligning those choices with their values. We’re impressed, and applaud anyone who decides to make such a change… for whatever reason (because nearly all of them are really good ones!).

Are you a vegan? Why’d you choose a diet and lifestyle that rejects all forms of animal products? Any particular inspirations? Share your thoughts with us… we’d love to learn more!

"The Gene Hackers"

Science, Tech & Disrupt
 By Michael Specter via newyorker.com

A powerful new technology enables us to manipulate our DNA more easily than ever before. “Imagine being able to manipulate a specific region of DNA . . . almost as easily as correcting a typo,” CRISPR’s unprecedented ability to edit genetic code will make possible a new generation of medical treatments.

For much of the past century, biology has been consumed with three essential questions: What does each gene do? How do we find the genetic mutations that make us sick? And how can we overcome them? With CRISPR, the answers have become attainable, and we are closing in on a sort of grand unified theory of genetics.

CRISPR technology offers a new outlet for the inchoate fear of tinkering with the fundamentals of life. There are many valid reasons to worry. But it is essential to assess both the risks and the benefits of any new technology.

EU Project Explores Deriving Graphene From Food Waste"

I’ve certainly seen many references to potential super material graphene over the past few years… but I haven’t really dug into them. But not only does this material have the potential to revolutionize the green economy, but it also could be produced from food waste. A new EU project, PlasCarb, is exploring the potential to create graphitic carbon (the basic material for graphene) and hydrogen from food headed for the landfill.

Whose Smart City?

Open Sustainability & Innovation

Whose Smart City?

"Plaza del Torico, Teruel, HDR"  by Marc (marcp_dmoz) CC BY NC SA

The proliferation of 'smart' solutions to a deluge of political and economic problems in today's cities may well serve to reinforce urban inequality at a time when new radical alternatives are in desperate need.

As a student of cities, I am very much interested in the diffusion and circulation of buzzwords, global slogans and global ideas about cities and their development strategies. In the last decade, I have observed the shifts from debates on technological and information cities, to cultural cities, creative cities, sustainable, green and resilient cities, to our current conjuncture with the rise of the 'smart' cities. But what does it mean for a city to be ‘smart’? What are the implications and rationales behind smart urbanism? Is smart urbanism as positive as the term suggests?

The concept behind smart cities is actually rather vague, there is no common definition of what a smart city is, most commonly the idea relies on the implicit assumption that urban infrastructures and everyday life can/should be optimized and ’greened’ through the technologies and innovations of global IT companies. So, what’s the problem with smart cities? Who wouldn’t want to live in a smart city anyway?

"Cuerpo, deseo, amor y tecnología"

Technology & Society
