Understanding social and public labs
Understanding social and public labs
By Geoff Mulgan via nesta.org.uk
This note summarises a view of the field of innovation labs - and what might lie ahead. It looks at the ways in which labs need to be both insiders and outsiders at the same time – and the practical challenges of the classic ‘radical’s dilemma’. If they stand too much inside the system they risk losing their radical edge; if they stand too far outside they risk having little impact. It follows that the most crucial skill they need to learn is how to navigate the inherently unstable role of being both insiders and outsiders; campaigners and deliverers; visionaries and pragmatists.
This paper looking at the various social and public labs I’ve come across around the world.
It suggests a typology for understanding them and describes some of the challenges they face – in particular, the radical’s dilemma of having to work both inside and outside established systems.

"Make Every Day Water Day"
Open Sustainability, Creativity & Innovation
Millions of people around the world don't have safe water.
World Water Day is March 22nd — a day when the world turns its attention
towards the 750 million people who lack access to safe water. But every
day of the year can be a Water Day. When Rajamma opens her tap, or
Grace hears raindrops filling her catchment system, or when Poppy is
able to offer her children a safe drink of water — each of these is a
Water Day.

The disparity between the rich and everyone else is larger than ever in
the United States and increasing in much of Europe. Why?
The signs of the gap—really, a chasm—between the poor and the super-rich
are hard to miss in Silicon Valley. On a bustling morning in downtown
Palo Alto, the center of today’s technology boom, apparently homeless
people and their meager belongings occupy almost every available public
bench. Twenty minutes away in San Jose, the largest city in the Valley, a
camp of homeless people known as the Jungle—reputed to be the largest
in the country—has taken root along a creek within walking distance of
Adobe’s headquarters and the gleaming, ultramodern city hall. The gap
between the wealthy and everyone else is largest in the United States.
The richest 1 percent of the population has 34 percent of the
accumulated wealth; the top 0.1 percent has some 15 percent.
Health and Environment Impacts of Endocrine Disruptors

Chemicals examined in landmark UN-Report
Many synthetic chemicals, untested for their disrupting effects on
the hormone system, could have significant health implications
according to the State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, a new report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and WHO.
“We urgently need more research to obtain a fuller picture of the health and environment impacts of endocrine disruptors”
Dr Maria Neira, WHO’s Director for Public Health and Environmen
The joint study calls for more research to understand fully
the associations between endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs)—found in
many household and industrial products—and specific diseases and
disorders. The report notes that with more comprehensive assessments and
better testing methods, potential disease risks could be reduced, with
substantial savings to public health. Via WHO

What does "clean" technology really mean? How can we make a shift toward a more ecological and low-carbon economy?
Investments in clean technology have grown considerably since coming into the spotlight around 2000. According to the United Nations Environment Program, wind, solar and biofuel companies received a record $148 billion in new funding in 2007 as rising oil prices and climate change policies encouraged investment in renewable energy. $50 billion of that funding went to wind power. Overall, investment in clean-energy and energy-efficiency industries rose 60 percent from 2006 to 2007. By 2018 it is forecast that the three main clean technology sectors, solar photovoltaics, wind power, and biofuels, will have revenues of $325.1bn.

"Can A Modern Bike Inspire More People To Ride?"

Meet Solid, a bike design inspired by the streets of Portland that includes an app to help you navigate.
For the past eight months, we’ve been actively engaged in The Bike
Design Project, a competition pairing five five bicycle craftsmen from
five diverse cities (Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and
our hometown, Portland). The directive given to each bike-building team
at the onset of the competition was to create the ultimate urban
utility bike. Given this charge, we took a step back. We knew we needed
to create the right tool, provide inspiration for everyone, and remove
all barriers for the everyday cyclist.

What Forms of Creativity
Turn You On?

It’s no secret: creativity is sexy. People all over the world rank creativity as a highly desirable quality in a partner, and people who are creative across a variety of fields report more sexual partners (similar results have been found in specific fields such as visual art, music, and humor). But are all forms of creativity equally attractive?
