The Dutch vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen is an artist that defies being pigeonholed by genre. She will forever be known as the vocalist for melancholic metallers The Gathering, but since striking out on her own in 2007, she has solidified a solo career, recorded and performed multiple times with   Devin Townsend, Anathema, Within Temptation, Moonspell, Nalm Death and more.

This has provided Anneke with a huge catalogue to choose from as a live performer,  which has led to the creation of a new group, VUUR, a band that features some of the best heavy metal players in the Netherlands.  In 2016, Anneke decided for the sake of clarity to narrow her musical focus, choosing to go in a folk acoustic direction as a solo artist and in a heavy progressive metal direction as a band vocalist. The name VUUR – translated from Dutch as “fire”, which can also be interpreted to mean “passion” or “drive” – was chosen as a moniker to represent Anneke’s metal side, with the idea that when fans buy a ticket with the VUUR name on it they will be getting her heavy progressive music, while an Anneke van Giersbergen show will be entirely different.

Italian architect Stefano Boeri has unveiled plans for a city near China's Liuzhou, featuring towers completely covered in trees and plants to combat air pollution. The Liuzhou Forest City will feature nearly 40,000 trees and almost one million plants, comprising 100 different species. The greenery is designed to trail over balconies and the roofs of a series of skyscrapers spanning 175 hectares along the Liujiang river, in the mountainous area of Guangxi.

 
Following on from Boeri's past trials of "vertical forests" in Milan and in Lausanne, the masterplan forms part the architect's Forest City concept, which will see cities made up of plant-covered skyscrapers rolled out across China's urban areas as a way to offset urban pollution. The architect's studio Stefano Boeri Architetti has also proposed a similar design for city in Shijiazhuang, while its pair of plant-covered skyscrapers recently broke ground in the centre of Nanjing. Each scheme provides sustainable high-density housing and office space packed heavily with greenery, as a way to depollute the surrounding environment by filtering dust particles from the air and absorbing carbon dioxide. Artificial intelligence has received its fair share of hype recently. However, it’s hype that’s well-founded: IDC predicts worldwide spend on AI and cognitive computing will culminate to a whopping $46 billion (with a “b”) by 2020, and all the tech giants are jumping on board faster than you can say “ROI.” But what is AI, exactly?. According to Hilary Mason, AI today is being misused as a sort of catch-all term to basically describe “any system that uses data to do anything.” But it’s so much more than that. A truly artificially intelligent system is one that learns on its own, one that’s capable of crunching copious amounts of data in order to create associations and intelligently mimic actual human behavior.

It’s what powers the technology anticipating our next online purchase (Amazon), or the virtual assistant that deciphers our voice commands with incredible accuracy (Siri), or even the hipster-friendly recommendation engine that helps you discover new music before your friends do (Pandora). But AI is moving past these consumer-pleasing “nice-to-haves” and getting down to serious business: saving our butts. Much in the same way robotics entered manufacturing, AI is making its mark in healthcare by automating mundane, repetitive tasks. This is especially true in the case of detecting cancer. By leveraging the power of deep learning, algorithms can now be trained to distinguish between sets of pixels in an image that represents cancer versus sets that don’t—not unlike how Facebook’s image recognition software tags pictures of our friends without us having to type in their names first. This software can then go ahead and scour millions of medical images (MRIs, CT scans, etc.) in a single day to detect anomalies on a scope that humans just aren’t capable of. That’s huge.

You Can Fold Up These Nearly Unbreakable Solar Panels And Take Them With You: Conventional solar panels “are brittle because they’re crystalline,” Murat Okandan, CEO of mPower Technology, the startup making the new technology, tells Fast Company. “If you bend or flex them, at some point they’ll just break and shatter. By making our cells small and then interconnecting them we’re able to make them almost unbreakable.”
 
A typical solar panel–more than five feet long and encased in glass–isn’t exactly portable. But a new type of solar technology, miniaturized so that each cell is the size of a piece of glitter, could be used anywhere. The tiny cells are made from high-efficiency silicon, like standard solar panels. But the new form means that they’re not only small but flexible, and can be folded up for transportation, incorporated into clothing, or easily used in electronics.
