"Get to Know Alejandro Aravena"

the Pritzker Prize Winner Who Builds Half-Finished Homes

The UC Innovation Center, on the Universidad Católica de Chile’s campus, is the building you’re likely to see first if you Google Aravena. Photo by Nina Vidic.

By Margaret Rhodes via WIRED: In 2014, Alejandro Aravena, the architect who just won the prestigious Pritzker Prize, delivered a TED talk on his work. He punctuated the talk by turning his back to the audience and scrawling drawings and equations on a blackboard with a stick of chalk. The old-school presentation method invited his audience to watch his ideas take shape in real time, emphasizing process over finished product.

Metaphorically speaking, it was a fitting presentation technique for Aravena, who practices what he calls “incremental design.” With this approach, he and the designers at Elemental, his studio, build housing structures that are deliberately unfinished. Consider the Quinta Monroy Housing project, which Aravena worked on in Iquique, Chile, in 2004. Aravena’s team built out the units’ foundations and concrete frames, and left it at that. The approach, he argues, gave future residents a chance to complete their respective units as they saw fit, resulting in culturally appropriate homes that actually look and feel like homes, as opposed to government-issued housing.  See full article via  WIRED.

"El Dinero perdió el Juicio"

by Patricio Fernández via The Chinic Online

Girls and women carrying plastic jerry cans of water on their heads is a common sight in rural areas of poor countries. The WaterWheel eases that burden by storing water in a round 50-litre container that doubles as a wheel.

Designed after consultations with villagers in the dry northern Indian state of Rajasthan, the WaterWheel is made from high-quality plastic that can withstand rough terrain. It will sell for $25-$30, compared with $75-$100 for similar products.

Dali’s Creative Thinking

By Michael Michalko via Creativitypost

How to conjure up dreamlike imagery from your subconscious. In the history of art, most people could easily argue that Salvador Dalí is the father of surrealistic art. Surrealism is the art of writing or painting unreal or unpredictable works of art using the images or words from an imaginary world. Dali's art is the definition of surrealism. Throughout his art he clearly elaborates on juxtaposition (putting similar images near each other), the disposition (changing the shape of an object), and morphing of objects, ranging from melted objects dripping, to crutches holding distorted figures, to women with heads of bouquets of flowers.

Surrealism is the stressing of subconscious or irrational significance of imagery, or in more simplistic terms, the use of dreamlike imagery. Dalí's absurd imagination has him painting pictures of figures no person would even dream of creating. How was Salvador Dali able to conjure up these extraordinary images from his subconscious that he used in his surrealistic paintings?

"Gravitational Waves"

Opens a New Window on the Universe

LIGO’s First-Ever Detection of Gravitational Waves Opens a New Window on the Universe.

In deep space, two black holes spiraled toward each other, their tremendous mass warping spacetime and propagating gravitational waves across the fabric of the universe at light-speed. The two black holes eventually crashed into one another and merged into one even bigger black hole, emitting a crescendo of waves.

That quiet tremolo on the catgut of reality made it to Earth, where the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory was listening. For 13 years LIGO heard, it seemed, every vibration but the one it was supposed to. But on September 14, 2015 it detected those black-hole-crashing swells as they washed over the planet. “Ladies and gentlemen, we have detected gravitational waves,” David Reitze, LIGO’s Executive Director, said today at a press conference. “We did it.” READ FULL ARTICLE VIA WIRED IN THIS LINK

Cities of Innovation
 Amsterdam as a
Hyper-Connected City

By Bas Verhart via Meeting of the Minds

As the world moves into an accelerated phase of mass urbanization and mega cities are developing across the globe, the governments of many smaller cities are looking for ways to differentiate themselves and to attract talent from around the world. Two cities stand out in their drive to be different: San Francisco and Amsterdam. Even though both are relatively small in comparison with the mega cities popularized by international media, one could say these “boutique cities” think differently and act more nimbly than their mega counterparts. It is no coincidence that Lonely Planet selected these two hyper-connected cities as the #1 and #2 destination cities for 2013.

Alejandro Aravena the 2016 Pritzker Prize laureate

“If there is any power in design, that’s the power of synthesis.”

When asked to. build housing for 100 families in Chile ten years ago, Alejandro Aravena looked to an unusual inspiration: the wisdom of favelas and slums. Rather than building a large building with small units, he built flexible half-homes that each family could expand on. It was a complex problem, but with a simple solution — one that he arrived at by working with the families themselves. With a chalkboard and beautiful images of his designs, Aravena walks us through three projects where clever rethinking led to beautiful design with great benefit.

Alejandro Aravena works inside paradoxes, seeing space and flexibility in public housing, clarity in economic scarcity, and the keys to rebuilding in the causes of natural disasters.
