Life & Creativity "The Science of setting Goals" How to make New Year’s resolutions
by Nadia Goodman via Ideas TED
How to make New Year’s resolutions that actually work out this time.
It’s
the time of year when optimism strikes anew and we think to ourselves:
our New Year’s resolutions will totally work out this time. Never mind
that we abandoned them by Valentine’s Day last year. And the year
before. And, well, you know the drill.
"Never Tear Us Apart" is a single released by Australian rock group INXS in August 1988 and was filmed in Prague, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It was also included on the band's sixth studio album, Kick. The music was written by Andrew Farriss, who recorded a blues-style demo and gave it to Michael Hutchence who wrote the lyrics. This videoclip directed by Richard Lowenstein.
"Never
Tear Us Apart" is a sensuous ballad, layered with synthesizers and
containing dramatic pauses before the instrumental breaks.
Kirk Pengilly lends a cathartic saxophone solo near the end. According to the liner notes of Shine Like It Does: The Anthology (1979–1997), the song was originally composed on piano as a bluesy number in the style of Fats Domino. Producer Chris Thomas suggested a synth-based arrangement instead.
The
video for the song, featuring an extended intro, was filmed in various
locations in Prague along with "Guns in the Sky" and "New Sensation",
all directed by Richard Lowenstein.
The single reached #24 in the UK, and stayed on the charts for seven weeks. In the U.S., it reached #7 on theBillboard Hot 100. After his death in 1997, Michael Hutchence's coffin
was carried out of St. Andrews Cathedral by the remaining members of
INXS and younger brother Rhett, as "Never Tear Us Apart" was played in
the background. This song is now thought of by many original INXS fans
as Hutchence's anthem.
The song was used in the opening sequence of the director's cut of the 2001 cult film, Donnie Darko. It would have been featured in the original release had the rights for it not been deemed too expensive by the producers. ("The Killing Moon" by Echo & the Bunnymen served as its replacement.)
In 2006, the song was voted "Nation's Favourite Lyric" by viewers of pay TV music channel VH1 in Australia.
Recently, the song has been adopted by The Squadron, the Newcastle United Jets supporter group, and sung in unison at the start and 90th minute of their A-League association football
matches. This is in homage to the line, "cause we all have wings, but
some of us don't know why", used now in reference to the Jets symbol of
their club. The song's popularity among supporters has prompted a move
to have the song be played at the beginning of each match, first
happening on 18 October 2008, when the Jets defeated the Melbourne
Victory 1−0.
In February 2014, after the Channel 7 screening of "INXS: Never Tear
Us Apart" mini-series, "Never Tear Us Apart" charted again in Australia
via download sales. It peaked at #11 on the ARIA Singles Chart,
surpassing its original peak position of #14 back in 1988.
INXS LYRICS "Never Tear Us Apart" Writer(s): Andrew Farriss, Michael Hutchence
Don't ask me What you know is true Don't have to tell you I love your precious heart
I I was standing You were there Two worlds collided And they could never tear us apart
We could live For a thousand years But if I hurt you I'd make wine from your tears
I told you That we could fly 'Cause we all have wings But some of us don't know why I I was standing You were there Two worlds collided And they could never ever tear us apart

pin-up girl, iconic pieces of pop culture... They were considered inspiring, but mostly as inspiring female patriots that were helpful for good luck in the war. Prior to World War II they were praised for their beauty and less focus was on their sexuality. However, during the war, the drawings transformed into women playing dress-up in military drag and drawn in seductive manners, like that of a child playing with a doll.

Kentaro Toyama used to speak about the idea that technology amplifies what's already out there. I'm very interested in finding ways to cultivate virtues such as compassion and kindness—all the things that actually help us relate to each other. Then exponential technology can meet this fertile ground, and the results will be more beneficial for humankind. Technology is not a miracle drug. It's not going to just go and fix everything if we are corrupted in our minds and in our hearts. Technology can help to bring more people into this global conversation, but we need to also talk about the quality of that connection. How are we using the technology to facilitate connection? Is it something that can help empower people’s voices? That is something we have to decide. We have to create the infrastructure—it's not going to happen just by itself. This is part of the global consciousness discussion. It’s definitely a global challenge—how to make people be more aware.
"We have this massive power to open doors for each other, but also, to close them. So let's make sure that our behavior, when we encounter people, is the kind that opens doors and elevates people. I think that's the only way to really change the world for the better." One of My favorite quotes is from Aristotle, "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." –Emilia Lahti. See full Interview via Singularity Hub...
London
Calling is the third studio album by English punk rock band the Clash. Released today in 1979, the cover was an homage to Elvis Presley debut album... London Calling has been considered by many critics to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time. In
a contemporary review for The New York Times, John Rockwell said the
album finally validated the acclaim received by the Clash up to that
point because of how their serious political themes and vital playing
were retained in music with innovative features and broad appeal: "This
is an album that captures all the Clash's primal energy, combines it
with a brilliant production job by Guy Stevens and reveals depths of
invention and creativity barely suggested by the band's previous work."
With her classic figurative forms, highly acclaimed Russian magically captures the lyrical romanticism of renaissance portraiture, while creating art that is completely modern and original.
Upon
his death, many critics and peers offered reevaluations ofWeiland's
life and career, including David Fricke of Rolling Stone and Billy
Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, the latter calling Weiland one of three
"voices of the generation" alongside Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.
Against a backdrop of uncertainty, economic turmoil and unprecedented change a new picture is emerging of the skills and traits for success (and perhaps even simply survival) in the modern era. At the heart of this essential skillset for the future lies... creativity.
A raft of recent research studies demonstrates that creativity is vital from the shopfloor to the boardroom and at the level of the individual to the organization as a whole. What is more... our economic fortunes at a societal level probably rest on creativity too. Below are 7 (magnificent!) themes and some research studies that convinced me. I wonder if they will convince you of the cruciality of creativity too.
While we haven’t done as much on veganism lately as we once did when Justin was submitting posts regularly, we’re still mindful of the impacts of the traditional animal-based diet on the environment and human health.
So, while many will call this lifestyle choice a “fad” encouraged by
the celebrity set, we know that veganism is a solid option for a healthy
lifestyle… and is easier on the planet. Though we don’t all practice
veganism, understanding the impacts of our food choices helps us make
those choices knowingly… not the kind of mindset normally associated
with the American diet.
So, why is the vegan lifestyle growing in the US? Sure, it’s presence
in popular culture makes a difference… but it’s also clear from the
infographic below that many Americans are becoming more mindful of their
food choices, and aligning those choices with their values. We’re
impressed, and applaud anyone who decides to make such a change… for
whatever reason (because nearly all of them are really good ones!).
Are you a vegan? Why’d you choose a diet and lifestyle that rejects
all forms of animal products? Any particular inspirations? Share your
thoughts with us… we’d love to learn more!

A powerful new technology enables us to manipulate our DNA more easily than ever before. “Imagine being able to manipulate a specific region of DNA . . . almost as easily as correcting a typo,” CRISPR’s unprecedented ability to edit genetic code will make possible a new generation of medical treatments.
For much of the past century, biology has been consumed with three essential questions: What does each gene do? How do we find the genetic mutations that make us sick? And how can we overcome them? With CRISPR, the answers have become attainable, and we are closing in on a sort of grand unified theory of genetics.
CRISPR technology offers a new outlet for the inchoate fear of tinkering with the fundamentals of life. There are many valid reasons to worry. But it is essential to assess both the risks and the benefits of any new technology. Read full article via newyorker.com.
